Thanksgiving Weekend Reunions

Another Thanksgiving, another reunion. This year was the one-year anniversary of my high school's sixth year reunion. Amazing that it's been seven years since I stepped out of that little cocoon known as the Charles E Smith Jewish Day School.

There were 75 kids who graduated with me, and a large chunk of us are still pretty close. JDS serviced kids from Kindergarten thru 12th grade, so it's more than just a high school. It's quite amazing being able to reference obscure events in one's life--like a certain quirk of a 9th grade History teacher, a catchphrase of a first grade PE teacher, or the mysterious buldge in my 7th grade soccer coach's sweatpants--only to be countered with an equally irrelevant and esoteric event from the 3rd grade.

Last night's unofficial reunion included some of those priceless quips mixed in with lots of alcohol, pizza from our middle school days and great conversation. Not too much had changed since our days on the playgrounds of Rockville, Maryland.

Facebook officially recognizes Crooked Monkey

Breaking News: Facebook has officially recognized Crooked Monkey as a network on Facebook. This is huge. This is bigger than when we made the Forbes 500 list last year. Crooked Monkey has joined the ranks of other companies found officially on Facebook like Nike, Under Armour, and Google.

Now when I tell people I work for Crooked Monkey, I know that I have the credibility of Facebook's Network system to back up my claims. If you'd like to join our network, email us a compelling reason (or post it here) and if we like it, we'll let you join it.

Global Warming T-shirt Submission

Jen F. from
Schenectady, New York, chimed in with a great concept but we need help with the words.

Originally she wanted it to say: "
Global warming is just God hugging the Earth Closer" with the attached picture.

But we're looking to tweak it a bit. Perhaps,
"At least the sun loves us."
Or something about the sun trying to reach out and rebuild our relationship.

Let us know if you have a way to put this t-shirt together. We're close!

Back at the University of Maryland

Crooked Monkey is a big supporter of the University of Maryland and its endeavors. I always like to remind people that Crooked Monkey got its start selling Fuck Duke t-shirts. What humbled beginnings. We ran through the dorms, selling from door-to-door, getting chased out of buildings by RAs and police. But that did not stop us. We wanted to make sure that ESPN and everyone else out there watching the game new that we hated Duke, and that Testudo bent the Blue Devil over and gave it to him from behind.

Since those early days a lot has changed, but a lot has also remained the same. We still produce awesome t-shirts--just now they're refined and legal. We still sell t-shirts--just now we sell to retail locations with business licenses and permits. We still run from the cops--just now its cause these guns are illegal in 48 states.

So yesterday we joined the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at their annual marketplace. We even made the front page of the Diamondback, the University of Maryland school newspaper.

Check out our Guys Maryland t-shirts: University of Maryland Guys T-shirt - Mckeldin, University of Maryland Guys T-shirt - Newspaper, University of Maryland Guys T-shirt - Terrapins

Girls Maryland T-shirts: University of Maryland Girls T-shirt - Newspaper, University of Maryland Girls T-shirt - Mckeldin

Crooked Monkey inside word on Obama's new residence

As you know, Crooked Monkey is based in Washington DC. We have close ties to our nation's capital and are probably the most "in the know" fashion company when it comes to politics. That's why we were able to report at 10:59PM on November 4th (1 minute before CNN and MSNBC), that Barack Obama had won the presidential elections.

We also reported first about Bjs for Obama, when no one else was talking about it.

Anyways, we now know where President-Elect Barack Obama will be living. An official in the Obama campaign recently told the Crooked Monkey blog, under condition of anonymity for national security, that the new President will be moving into a white house on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW DC, on January 20th, 2009.

Crooked Monkey will be coming out with DCs very own "Stars Map," which will detail where the President and his Vice President will be living for the next four years.

The picture shown is an architects rendering of Obama's proposed residence.

Dr. Jay's picks up Crooked Monkey T-shirts

Twas the night before a big shipment, when all through the warehouse
Every creature was stirring; even the boss.

Drjays.com, an awesome online retailer, put it in a huge order on Monday, which we had to print, bag, tag, and deliver by today. In order to make it happen we had to perfrom some miracles. Just to put it in perspective, it's the equivalent of a professor assigning the final exam and a term paper two nights before its due date.

We took on the task because we like performing miracles, and we were thrilled that Dr. Jays wanted to pick our t-shirts up for the holidays. So last night we got the shipment of shirts in at 7 PM and the pizza arrived shortly thereafter at 7:15. We spent the first 45 minutes of the night eating pizza and procrastinating. At around 8 we realized we should buckle down, because the shipment wouldn't prepare itself.

We had Ben, Tammy, Jessica and myself on hand to accomplish the task. We didn't leave the office until 11:30. Ben missed the football game, Jessica had two tests and a quiz that she forgot to study for, and Tammy missed her bedtime by about 3 hours.

This morning at 9 AM the shipment was picked up and delivered to Dr. Jays. You'll see us on their site within the next few days. Buy a shirt to support our miracle working.

Changes at Crooked Monkey Funny t-shirts

We are always looking to improve the look and feel of our website. We have a responsibility to our customers to not only provide awesomely funny t-shirts, but also to provide you with an experience unlike any other. In that vein, we have put a lot more emphasis on our blog--giving insight into the inner workings of the Funny t-shirt capital of the world.

We are considering moving our blog to the front page, so that when you visit www.crookedmonkey.com, the first page you see is the blog. This is a pretty significant change, as most t-shirt companies have a "call to action" on their front page. They show their product immediately when you log onto the front page, so that you can buy buy buy. Well at Crooked Monkey we want you to enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

We're less concerned about selling and more into enjoying. So if you want to only read the blog, have at it. If you want to take a look at the shirts and have a good laugh, go for it. And if you want to buy a shirt while you're here, we applaud that too.

"Cause people can get a burger anywhere, they come to Chotsky's for the fun and the atmosphere."

Look out for some more changes coming ahead

Mrs. Della Leapman

Michael Dr. Gildener Leapman has a beautiful girlfriend named Della. They might or might not get married. Regardless, there are no google results for her new last name, Della Leapman. Well, we just changed that.

America wins the Superbowl

When we go to tradeshows or meet boutique owners, buyers always ask where we ship from and are always surprised when we say Washington DC. The majority of t-shirt lines are based in New York City or Los Angeles. There isn't too much happening in the realm of fashion in this city, but that doesn't mean DC can't be cool once every four years.

At 11PM on November4th, CNN called the election for Obama and DC erupted. I went to a bar in Dupont Cirlce to watch the returns--girls were crying, guys were consoling, and everyone was euphoric. I headed back to my apartment to watch Obama's acceptance speech and I started getting texts from all my friends saying "To the White House." So immediately after the speech I headed to the White house with my roommates, Jon and Eddie, to meet up with thousands of others on their proverbial journey to the new White House. Our walk down 16th street was hilarious--high fives, low fives, and chants of "Bjs for Obama"--but it was quite a hike. So midway through our expedition I hailed down a car and we hitched a ride down to the White House. As you can imagine, parking was impossible to find, so as soon as they started looking for parking we looked for the exit door. And there we were, chanting and singing with the best of them at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It felt like America had just won the superbowl. The GW paper said that some girls were giving out "Hugs for Obama," but I think the paper was just being kind because "BJs for Obama" was in full effect. What a great time to be living in the Nation's Capital.

University of Maryland features Funny t-shirts in Worldview magazine

The school of Behavior and social sciences wrote us up in their magazine, "WorldView." What an honor. If the picture looks familiar, it's because it is! It is the same picture from the Washington Post article in the Making It section.

Crooked Monkey has a special bond with the University of Maryland and they love our funny t-shirts. UMD is the first school for which we are producing licensed University apparel, and the students have responded in kind. My brother said he saw 5 kids the other day wearing our University of Maryland t-shirts.

We look forward to working with the Terrapins and to continue to provide the school with first rate products and the opportunity to sample our t-shirts before we roll them out to other schools.

Hitting for the cycle on Election Day

What kind of person would I be if I didn't live out the recommendations that I suggested on this blog? Not a good one.

Yesterday I went on the Election-day-free-circuit tour around Potomac, MD. My family and I voted at around 3PM. We then hit up Cabin John Mall--where we killed 3 birds with one stone. With the "Yo Vote" sticker in hand, we got our free coffee from Starbucks. Juiced up on the coffee, we sprinted over to California Tortilla--where we not only got a free taco, but also received a coupon for another free taco. Ezra Weinblatt, my brother, and I enjoyed those tacos and then hit up Dunkin Donuts for our final campaign spot of the day. I then went back to Crooked Monkey and purchased a couple of new t-shirts from the warehouse, at a highly discounted rate.

The picture shows us satiated on free goods and prideful of the wonderful, robust democracy we live in.

Make Your Voice Heard - Obama endorses Crooked Monkey's Funny T-shirts

In a previous blog post, I wrote about how Mccain endorsed Crooked Monkey's Funny T-shirts. Well it looks like Obama saw what kind of effect that had on his campaign, and chose to follow suit. Endorsing Crooked Monkey for president of Funny t-shirt world has tremendous advantages for presidential candidates. You rub our booty, we'll rub yours.

Kudos to Barack Obama for pulling out a last second vote for funny t-shirts around the globe. Last night, without forewarning our staff or giving any indication as such, Barack Obama told the public he believed in Crooked Monkey. He said "Make your voice heard." It seems like the presidential candidate had been perusing our website quite a bunch in the last couple of days and decided to quote one of our trademark t-shirts.

Well Barack Obama, we appreciate the shoutout. Don't think it won't go unnoticed on election day.

Crooked Monkey cares

This is a pretty big election. Tomorrow we elect the new leader of our country at a pivotal time. I don't envy the next president, as he will have to deal with a deteriorating economy, global warming, and a nuclear Iran. It's not a position I would seek, and I do question their judgment for running in this election.

But hopefully one of these candidates for president will turn our country around. We're not endorsing any candidates, but we are encouraging voting. If you vote tomorrow, email us and we'll give you 25% of your t-shirt order. Just email us and say "I voted." And we'll send you a promo code.

Here are some other promotions that cool companies that care about our world are running:
California Tortilla: Local to Washington DC, they are giving out free tacos if you have the "I voted" sticker
Starbucks: An up and coming National chain of coffee beans is giving out free coffee
Ben and Jerry's: The coolest and most socially conscious entrepreneurs are giving out free ice cream.

If I was you, here's how I'd hit for the cycle. Wake up. Vote early (and often). Swing by Starbucks for your morning fix. Then hit up California Tortilla for lunch, and top it off with Ben and Jerry's. Then when you're bored at work, check out our funny t-shirts and grab that t-shirt you've been wanting to buy yourself or your friend at a highly discounted rate!

The best thing about this blog post is that it was inspired by Noam Weinblatt, my brother. He's driving all the way home from college to Make a Difference and wanted to make sure that I give a shout out to voting and all those great companies encouraging it.
