Contrary to what you may think, you cannot just walk into the bank and cash an oversized check--those checks are just for PR purposes. I'd be interested in learning the history of the oversized check. I know it wasn't just created for Happy Gilmore.
I was tempted to bring the check to the bank with me today and try to cash it--and videotape the experience. But we had some technical difficulties.
Today we got an email from the Dignman Center and BB&T informing us how to collect on the prize money.
What will we be using the money for? 1)You know what I would do if I had a million dollars? I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities... 2)Making more funny t-shirts 3)Making more graphic t-shirts 4)Revamping our website to make it more Google friendly (when you google funny t-shirts, we want to be first).
As you all aware, we are running a 20% discount on all our funny shirts. You don't have to type in a promo code--its a gift to celebrate our 200th blog post.
A customer of ours just logged onto the site and got a phenomenal deal--better than any recession buster deal I've seen.
Here's how it went down: Fully aware that you can get free shipping when you buy two or more shirts, he ordered a couple Facebook t-shirts at the regular 20% sale, and then entered an extra 15% promo code at checkout. Leaving him with a total discount of 42% off!! The total should've been: $53, but because of his savvy shopping, he only paid $30.72. Good work. We're always happy to see our customers take advantage of great deals, and this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals.
This is actually the 206th blog post, but who's counting?
To celebrate our 100th blog post we wrote an awesome post, but promised a few things that we didn't follow through on. This blog won't be as good as that one, but it will follow through on all those empty promises. Specifically rating our top blogs.
If you notice, on the bottom of all of our blogs, we assign different labels to make it easier for our readers to search through our different topics/subjects. And to direct readers to our favorite blogs, we invented a label entitled "top blog posts" that we give to posts we deem hilarious. Its a bit presumptuous, considering the fact that we assign that label as its published, before receiving any feedback or before anyone's even read the blog. But I guess we really only make jokes that make us laugh anyways.
So here's the Top 10+1 list. We chose funny blog posts, informative blog posts, milestones in our history, and sometimes politically inspired posts. And of course all of our posts have a deep connection to our Funny T-shirts.
(P.S. The photo above is a picture of cupcakes that were made by Julia for my birthday last month. If you look closely, you'll notice that the cupcakes are monkeys. Amazing. Look out for her new cupcake shop coming to DC in 2011.)
This weeks installment of "Dj Shnooms Song of the week" is quite appropriate for our new president. The group, called "The New Deal," is a reference to FDR's New Deal program--something that pundits say Obama should emulate.
Crooked Monkey wins BB&T Invitational with Under Armour
Crooked Monkey was established in 2005. In May, it will celebrate its 4 year anniversary. We've accomplished a lot in our short history--featured in magazines, picked up by department stores and trendy boutiques, and put a smile on over 120,000 happy customers. And now, finally, we can add, "receiving an oversized check (a la Happy Gilmore) to our list of accolades."
Starting in 2006, Kevin Plank (the founder and CEO of Under Armour) has hosted an annual business competition for the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland, called the Cupid's Cup. In its first year, Crooked Monkey was nominated for the award and finished as a runner up in the competition. This year, Crooked Monkey could not compete for the award because our annual sales volume exceeded the upper limit.
Luckily BB&T launched the BB&T invitational--which features companies connected with the University of Maryland. It allows us to showcase our businesses, and invites students, alumn and other entrepreneurs to get a taste for each company. The attendees then vote for their favorite company and the winner is announced at the Cupid's Cup, in front of the entire Under Armour Executive team. There was stiff competition from a list of other strong, thriving entrepreneurs. But in the end our Funny t-shirts were a fan favorite and we took home the prize money and an oversized check!
Than you to: Kevin Plank, Asher Espstein (from the Dingman Center) and BB&T.
For some reason, we're not able to stream the On air show with Ryan Seacrest--AHHHH. We've done everything the troubleshooting site asks of us, but its still not working. We downloaded some Firefox add-ons, but we still can't hear the Crooked monkey t-shirt promotion on the Ryan Seacrest radio show.
This is killing us over here. We want to hear the joy and excitement that all those lucky winners are feeling. Screeching, Shrieking, Crying. OMG OMG LOL ROTFL LMAO I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST WONT A FREE SHIRT FROM CROOKED MONKEY.
Well if you are listenging to the Ryan Seacrest radio show, let us know how its going. Maybe even send us a tweet: @crookedmonkey.
As we stated in our blog post yesterday about the Ryan Seacrest t-shirt giveaway, we sent a bunch tee shirts for their radio show and they are giving out the shirts now. So if you're one of the lucky winners, congrats. If not, go check out the rest of our shirts on the Crooked Monkey t-shirt website
It's happening tomorrow, (Thursday). So if you're in the Los Angeles area, listen to the On Air Show with Ryan Seacrest from 6-8 AM (pacific time) and try to be one of the lucky On Air t-shirt giveaway winners. And if you're not in LA, stream it at the KISSFM website cause I'm sure they'll have a field day with the shirts we gave them.
Yesterday I decided that I wanted to get to the office early, so I left my apartment at 9 AM. I was rewarded with a lot of traffic and an extra 25 minutes to my early morning commute. I learned my lesson. Today I'm still working from my apartment.
Early bird gets the worm? More like, early bird gets stuck in traffic.
We met Greivis Vasquez last week at a business competition put on by the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and Kevin Plank, CEO of Under Armour. I'll tell you more about that competition when we get pictures (for now, i'll just have you know that Crooked Monkey received one of those big oversized Happy-Gilmore checks).
We gave Greivis one of our University of Maryland shirts--and he loved it so much he wore it the next day. Greivis, the star Point Guard on the Terrapins basketball team, probably gets a lot of free stuff--so we're honored that he loved our shirt enough to wear it!
South Beach Loves Crooked Monkey's Funny t-shirts. Last year, I was walking down Lincoln Road and some girl was wearing the Don't waste my daytime minutes t-shirt.
And just this past week, when I was in Miami, I was riding an elevator and in walks a guy wearing the Best Buds T-shirt. Here's the conversation that ensued: Me: Nice shirt. Him: Thanks. Me: That's one of my shirts. Him: Actually, I got it from my brother. Me: I meant, I own the company that makes those shirts, Crooked Monkey. Him: Oh, cool. I love this shirt. Nice work. Congratulations on your success Me: Thanks. Wear it in good health.
This week's song is somewhat related to the Crooked Monkey brand. The artist (Chris Brown) is a wifebeater, and Crooked Monkey has sold wifebeaters in the past. Enjoy. Thanks Noam.
I was in Miami last week and, among other things, got to see my cousin. She's a budding entrepreneur--at the age of 12 she started her first magazine. When I launched Crooked Monkey she told me she wasn't accepting any advertisers because she hated how ads take up the first 40 pages of most magazines. By the age of 14 she got smart and asked if I'd advertise.
She just recently got Adobe Illustrator, and made the above illustration. Fantastic.
If you've got any Crooked Monkey illustrations--using funny t-shirts, the monkey or our name--send them through and we'll post them.
Sometimes you don't know what you've got, til its gone. And sometimes you don't know what you've got, until you get it. I haven't gotten my deep fryer yet, but its already changed my life dramatically. Fried Chicken. Fried tofu. FUNNEL CAKE. Those are my three favorite food groups, and I don't get to eat them often enough. But now I can eat them on demand.
Well not really, cause I don't know how to cook, but I'm going to be throwing a weekly Deep Fry Party--which should solve my inability to cook problem. Who knows maybe we'll even deep fry a t-shirt and sell a limited edition shirt. We'll batter it up before of course, and sprinkle sugar on it afterward. Feel free to email in your recipes for the aforementioned delicatessens
My brother, Noam, starting producing music 2 years ago. The other week, he and my older brother went to NYC--home of Biggie and Jay Z--to pick up some turntables so he can start DJing and tear up the college scene. He's a freshmen at the University of Maryland.
Crooked Monkey has just launched an entire line of DJ shirts, inspired by Noam. They're doing phenomenally well and we'll post those graphic t-shirts real soon.
We're starting a new feature to this blog: Song of the week. DJ Shnooms will choose an awesome song so we can all add it to our library. This week's song, which Noam introduced me to a couple of years ago, is called "Party and Bullshit," a remix of a Notorious BIG song by Ratatat. Enjoy.
Big shout out to The Scene Bisnow, a highly read daily email from the guys at Bisnow. They did a nice little write about us yesterday and we got a ton of emails and Facebook messages congratulating us. I wore our Life Comes at you fast t-shirt for the shoot, because I knew it'd be a fan favorite. And my hand is resting on our Don't be Trashy shirt.
Its always nice to get written up in the local Press.
The Seventeen Issue with Let me hear you say Yeah t-shirt
As promised, here's the actual picture of the the Let me hear You say Yeah t-shirt spread in Seventeen Magazine. If you're thinking to yourself, is that Taylor Swift wearing a Crooked Monkey t-shirt? Then your inner most thoughts would be correct.
Nice work Seventeen. We'll keep on providing the awesome shirts, you keep on providing the awesome magazine.
Let me hear you say Yeah T-shirt featured in Seventeen Magazine
Seventeen Magazine, our favorite magazine ever, featured our Let me hear you say Yeah Girls t-shirt in their May issue--out in stands now. On the cover is Taylor Swift, the country/pop star phenom. Taylor Swift wears the t-shirt in the magazine. We got two hits with this shirt--Seventeen Magazine and Taylor Swift!
We'll post the Seventeen Magazine picture of our shirt as soon as we get it. But until then, you'll just have to buy the magazine yourself or trust us!
But I had to find a way to thank Twitter for the recent celebrity sighting--Ryan Seacrest wearing our I'm not a gardener i juts like hoes t-shirt. Now Twitter resides in the coveted email signature.
