One day a week, I work from my apartment instead of the Crooked Monkey offices. These days turn into mini staycations--I get to explore parts of DC, have meetings at new restaurants, and get lost in the streets of Washington DC.
It breathes inspiration into our funny and graphic t-shirts. If you're all about DC staycations, check out KstreetKate's blog--she's about to drop some knowledge on the topic.
I checked Google Analytics yesterday and found that we got 8 visitors who Googled "Bruno Penis" and found our website. Sorry to dissapoint.
"Bruno Penis." That's my favorite search term people have used--and it wasn't just a few people that came to our site with that search term. Who's googling that? And why are we so high up on that term.
Once you make one hit record, you've got to make another. Rocky did it. Back to the Future did it twice. And Jay-Z has done it. Coming September 11th, Blueprint 3 will be released as Jay-Z's 11th studio album. He just released a single from the new album on Friday called "Run This Town".
DC bloggers and trendsetters Ebong Eka, Kate Michael, and Pamela Sorensen have a bi-weekly webisode called "The district Dish." They feature individuals with interesting stories/businesses/charities/lives.
This week they decided to interview yours truly. I was honored to be asked to be on the show. Kate Michael writes and produces K street Kate, Pamela Sorensen writes and produces Pamelas Punch and Ebong Eka owns a men's fashion line called Mi Chiamo Eka.
Great group of people. I discussed t-shirts, the origins of Crooked Monkey, where we get inspiration and celebrities wearing our t-shirts.
Michael Wilbon was filmed that same day--so I got to meet him. He's a real real nice guy and very interesting to talk to. He's got a few more views for his edition of The District Dish than I do, so go watch my edition so we can beat him out.
Today has been great. I woke up, walked outside and it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining with a bit of breeze. Perfect pool weather. After I got outside, I hung out with my friends and am now heading to the pool. To make this day even brighter, this week's Song of the Week goes to an upbeat Michael Franti song
Every year my brother's best friend organizes a group to walk for ALS in memory of Norman Holzberg. The group, comprised of best friends from college and other walks of life, is called Stormin 4 Normin. It's a great charity and Crooked Monkey has been involved with it for two years now. It's part of our overall effort to give back to charities and philanthropies and to help friends.
Another one of their friends, Seth, is an amazing graphic designer. He designed the shirts, we produced them. This year they raised lots of money for ALS research and also won the best t-shirt design. If you're interested in donating to this worthy cause, please let us know and we'll get you in contact with them.
If you ever wanted to watch a gay porno, now's the time to do it. Bruno, one of the funnier movies i've seen, was uncomfortable at times, but hilarious the entire time.
His practical joke-style is reminiscent of Andy Kaufman humor. I would've liked the movie a lot more if he spent more time interviewing famous people and getting them to say outlandish/contradictory statements, than relying on such over-the-top penis humor.
Essentially, the movie relied on a penis cam--showing Bruno's penis at least once every 5 minutes. The TV show, which I think is much funnier, relied more on creativity and wit. His TV show faux-hawk and style is also more appropriate.
Nonetheless, Bruno the movie was hilarious in its own right. Only Sacha Baron Cohen can turn a gay porno into a hilarious 83 minute feature film.
We've really appreciated all the love for our MJ shirts. It's meant a lot to us because of how meaningful these are to C monkey.
We've gotten a ton of emails and a good amount of bloggers writing about our Michael Jackson T-shirts.
I'm going to repost some of them here for you to see:
Jessica from Toronto wants us to sell to Toronto so she can pick up an MJ shirt: "I would love to be able to buy one of your MJ shirts if you did relocate to Toronto. Great site though, keep it up, loving the shirts!"
Bloggers:
-My favorite post came from Karen Watkins of the MoCoScene. She read our blog post, Mourning Michael and wrote: "Micha Weinblatt says in his company blog June 26, 'Since news broke of Michael's passing I have been teary eyed and at a loss for words.' But not for ideas. The master of the wicked double entendre quickly came up with four simple, hip T-shirts in homage to the great one - with V-necks, a first. Straightforward sentiment from Crooked Monkey, another first and an aesthetic winner." -Coty Gonzales did a top 10 of MJ shirts. Our I heart MJ shirt was # 1! Thanks.
-Northern Virginia Mag wrote: "You know I’m a huge fan of locally-based crookedmonkey.com" And added: "I couldn’t be happier to let you all know about Crooked Monkey’s new shirts designed in honor of the music legend who, according to Jessica Kades, has long served as an inspiration to the company."Dexie Wharton wrote that we were the first place she checked for MJ shirts. "They didn’t have them last week because as I found out yesterday from one the CM folks, they were making sure the shirts look perfect. I think you won’t be disappointed with what they came up with."
We realize that since Michael Jackson's passing every single one of our blog posts has been about the King of Pop. So why change a good thing?
This week's song of the week is a remix of the Jackson 5 "I want you back" song by Ztrip. The video reminds us of how cute, innocent and adorable Michael was before the media ripped into him.
The other day we wrote about the process of producing Michael Jackson tees. Since we loved him so much, we wanted to make sure that we were making the best MJ shirts out there--the ones that would honor Michael the most.
We've done it. Go check out our Michael Jackson girls shirts and our MJ guys shirts. For the first time ever, we've printed them on V-necks. Let us know what you think. These shirts mean a lot to us.
They are all printed on Unisex American Apparel Deep V neck t-shirts. For guys, you should order the size you normally order. But for girls, you should order one size lower--if you usually order a Small, then get an XS (b/c they're unisex). If you usually order a medium shirt, then order a Small Unisex v neck. Hope that makes sense!
