  • Chicane - Poppiholla (Song of the Week)

Posted on September 30, 2009 by Micha

Yom Kippur, the holiday that caused song of the week to appear on Wednesday, is a time for reflection and forgiveness. This week's song deserves the award because of its beautiful melody and its artistic and layered music video.

The video features a black man walking through a white, suburban neighborhood, raising everyone's unwarranted suspicion, and plays with our preconceived notions as well. The climax of the video leaves the viewer feeling a bit guilty.

Poppiholla's video is black and white to contrast our world around us. Not everything in life is black or white and not everyone fits into a particular box, we are all made up of different characteristics making us all unique.

The song Poppiholla sampled the song Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros, only changing the H and P to create the word Pop. It's a soothing song that contains elements of a relaxing and progressive style.

Have a good week and meaningful week,
    DJ Shnooms

  • Barry Jay - Infused (Song of the Week)

Posted on September 23, 2009 by Micha

Barry Jay receives his first Song of the Week award and we'll make sure Kanye doesn't interrupt him during his speech. This song gets the nod because it combines elements of progressive electronic music as well as electro house. Don't sit back and relax to this song. Go out, pregame, and start your night off with some pump up music.

    Have a good week,
    DJ Shnooms

  • That's How I roll Printing

Posted on September 22, 2009 by Micha

Well we just got a funny email from one of our customers. It brought something to our attention that I hadn't looked at in years. Here's what she writes:

    "Hi,
This might be a silly question, but I just received the thats how I roll tshirt and the design on the front is printed crooked on the tshirt. Is that part of the 'Crooked Monkey style, or should the design be straight on the t-shirt?"

We actually had to check the warehouse to see what she was talking about. And she's right, the text is a bit crooked. But that's on purpose! No one else had ever asked us about it, but it's a valid point.

I also like that she gave us an out--because our name is Crooked Monkey, we're allowed to produce Crooked shirts. But rest assured, if its printed crooked, it's because we meant to, not because we're trying to solidify our brand.

  • What a party

Posted on September 18, 2009 by Micha

We haven't had a chance to write the follow up blog to the Photoshoot at the Warehouse, but I wanted to give a small glimpse of the night. We transformed a beat up warehouse in Chinatown into an impressive lounge--with lighting (pictured above), a full bar, a kicking DJ and a live graffiti artist. Everyone who attended said they were blown away with the ambiance--that this was probably the coolest party they've been to this year. Nice! Our 6 weeks of work paid off!
On Monday we'll post a blog with all the details. In the meantime read up on the press that we got for the T-shirt launch party:

-9:25 AM on Monday morning (9/21), Angie Goff (pictured above) will discuss it on WUSA Channel 9 Morning News!

  • Photoshoot at the Warehouse. Tonight.

Posted on September 13, 2009 by Micha

6 weeks into the making and 100 invites later, the day has finally arrived. We've been preparing the warehouse this whole weekend--bringing in lighting, furniture, and toilet paper.

The invitation went out on August 17th--people were informed of the party via a t-shirt mailed to them in a black envelope. Since then we have sent out three emails: giving the address of the party, instructions on what to do with the t-shirt and regretfully informing people that there would be no plus 1s.
There will be lots of surprises, good times and brand new t-shirts. So sit back, relax and read people's live tweets about the party.

  • Kid Cudi - Simple As... (Song of the Week)

Posted on September 10, 2009 by Micha

Kid Cudi is a G. "Man on the Moon: The End of Day", Cudi's new album (dropping September 15th), has potential to be the top album of the year. This is the first time in a while that I have listened to an album and liked every song on it.

Kid Cudi is what you would get if Cee-Lo and Kanye decided to have a child. Kid Cudi's beats, reminiscent of Kanye's best work, incorporate real instruments with a great melody. His voice is graceful and soothing, and, like Cee-Lo, he manages to harmoniously sing while rapping.

In this song, "Simple As...", you hear ABC in one ear and 123 in the other with tight drums added on top. Kid Cudi has just become one of my favorite rap artists alongside Cee-Lo and Timbo. Thanks.

The album is being released next week, and here is a sample of all the songs:

    Have a great week,
    DJ Shnooms

  • T-shirt spotted in "So you think you can Dance"

Posted on September 10, 2009 by Micha

Today has been a good day. We found out that Twilight wants to put one of our t-shirts in their next movie, Eclipse (blog coming up), and we spotted one of our shirts on "So yo think you can dance" Season 6 Episode 1.Watch the episode below, from 4:17-4:24 there's 7 seconds of Brandon Dumlao gracefully dancing around the screen in one of our Crooked Monkey t-shirts. It's not yet online but we're real proud of Brandon for picking up our t-shirt and wearing it on National Television.

  • Crooked Monkey t-shirt sightings on College campuses

Posted on September 9, 2009 by Micha

The monkey is spreading like the black plague.

My brother told me he saw the original Crooked Monkey butterface t-shirt (no longer sold) at the University of Maryland yesterday.
I just got a text message from Jacob, a law student at Cardozo, who says that he just saw a t-shirt in New York's Cardozo law school.
The other day we had a sighting on the Upper East Side (pictured above). My web designer said he saw someone walking the opposite way, with a monkey on his back. Can you guess which shirt he's wearing?

  • Details for the Photoshoot at the Warehouse

Posted on September 2, 2009 by Micha

We've spoken a little bit about our Photoshoot at the Warehouse party, but not too much about it. Mostly because were not allowed to. It's a small venue--it only fits 100 people--and the guest list is sealed. It's next Sunday night, from 9-12Pm.

We're pulling out all the stops for this party. The invite was sent out in a black envelope, with banana candy, and a t-shirt as the formal invitation. Guests will bring the t-shirt to the party and be met with a myriad of surprises. We have an awesome DJ lined up--one of DC's best. Open bar is being provided by Emperor Vodka and Magic Hat. The Bar tenders are being supplied by Mie N Yu Restaurant. The photobooth, which will provide endless entertainment and awesome pics with Crooked monkey t-shirts, is provided by PoshBooth in DC.

The surprises and good times will be documented and published on the blog on September 14th. We're super excited for bringing Crooked Monkey's new graphic t-shirts and classic humor t-shirts to DC's finest.
